Today I am a Teacher Again

"My wife saved my life. She recognized I was having a stroke and called 911. I was treated with a new clot-dissolving drug - but my left side was paralyzed and I had trouble speaking. I teach college environmental science and being able to communicate is vital. This place is an amazing environment. I was back in front of my students in time for exams." - Horst Otterstetter, and his wife, Deni.

Innovative Therapies that Connect with Individuals.

Getting back to life means different things to different people - from "going home" to adapting to life after an injury or illness. That's why it's so important to find innovative ways to connect with our patients, both inpatient and outpatient, to encourage and motivate them.

Innovative therapies help patients connect with life. We offer recreational therapy, animal assisted therapy, arts and music, and horticulture therapy, among others. Another innovation - the beautiful restaurant-style dining room which brings people together to socialize. Our community re-entry activities help patients and families gain competence and confidence in getting back to daily life.

And our state-of-the-art equipment and innovative technology also offer new ways to heal. The gait-harness, for example, gives patients support that adjusts as they learn to walk again. Electrical stimulation for dysphagia helps patients regain normal swallowing.
