Therapeutic Nursery Program
Our Therapeutic Nursery Program (TNP) includes two specialized preschools for families located in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The TNP addresses the needs of young children with emotional and behavioral problems that may interfere with success in a regular preschool or day care setting. Without intervention these difficulties and behaviors may place the child at risk for school failure. The program fosters appropriate social, intellectual, emotional, and physical growth in each child.
Children learn to regulate the expression of their feelings, improve behavior within the classroom, and improve self-esteem by experiencing success in the group program. The program emphasizes building trusting relationships based on the philosophy that healthy relationships are the context for learning, growth, and change. Our program also provides family-focused services to address the needs of families and caregivers.
Children, ages three and four years old, who are residents of Montgomery County, or are four years old, and residents of Prince George’s County, and have emotional or behavioral disorders that can interfere with success in a regular preschool or day care setting, may be eligible for the programs. Problem behaviors addressed include the following:
- Attachment problems
- Excessive fears
- Frequent tantrums
- Inability to get along with peers and adults
- Frequent aggression
- Short attention span
- Oppositional behavior
- Separation anxiety
Our program provides the following family-focused services to address the needs of families and caregivers:
- Therapeutic preschool
- Family therapy
- Play therapy
- Parent education & support Group
- Consultation to child care providers as needed
- Assistance in transition to preschool or kindergarten when a child no longer needs or graduates from the TNP
An interdisciplinary team of mental health professionals and early childhood educators provide services for the TNP. Staff includes a senior teacher, assistant teacher, and clinical social worker. A child psychiatrist and psychologist provide consultation and testing. All staff members have specific expertise in working with young children with emotional and behavioral problems and their families. Volunteers and interns may assist in the classroom.
