Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is a not-for-profit, acute care facility that is located in Rockville, Maryland. Barry Greene, M.D.

Barry Greene, M.D. is board certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Greene graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine and continued his education at the Wright State University School of Medicine/USAF Integrated General Surgery Residency.

Dr. Greene is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, and the Montgomery County Medical Society. While in the United States Air Force he developed a Laparoscopic surgery program and through the years has taught Laparoscopic surgery. He has received numerous honors, including the Air Force Commendation Medal and Oak Leaf. Dr. Greene performs Weight Loss Surgery at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

 

Cynthia L. Long, M.D.

Cynthia L. Long, M.D is a board certified general surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive general and bariatric surgery.  Dr. Long received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.  She completed a general surgery residency at Rush University Medical Center and Cook County Hospital combined program and subsequently completed a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Long is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  She is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery (SAGES)

Dr. Long performs Laparoscopic Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass surgery and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

 

Amy L. Hernandez, RN, MS, CRNP

Amy L. Hernandez, RN, MS, CRNP is the Bariatric Program Coordinator at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.  She received her Master of Science Degree from the University of Maryland and her BSN from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Amy brings a unique combination of clinical program management skills as well as expertise in clinical care.

She assists patients as they prepare for surgery and co-teachers a pre-op class with our Bariatric Dietitian.  During this class they review how to prepare for surgery and what to expect throughout the hospital stay.  The surgical procedure, risks, benefits, possible complications and dietary guidelines are also reviewed.

Each bariatric surgical patient will have an individual pre-surgical consultation with Amy where she reviews pre-op tests, medical history, and performs a brief physical exam.  During this visit each patient will also have a consultation with one of our anesthesiologists.  A personalized tour of the hospital is also offered.

Amy provides post-operative support, assists with medical treatment and assures that each patient has a good understanding of their discharge instructions.  She also helps facilitate our Weight Loss Surgery Seminars and post-surgery support groups.

Ultimately, Amy partners with our bariatric surgery patients in their weight loss journey to create the best possible outcomes and a satisfying hospital experience.

 

Mandy Mirzaie, RD, LDN

Mandy Mirzaie, RD, LDN, works as Bariatric Clinical Dietitian. Mrs. Mirzaie is a graduate of University of Texas at Austin, with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition. Mrs. Mirzaie is responsible for outpatient counseling of all Bariatric surgical patients and group education sessions for pre and postoperative patients.
