Pettit Family Charitable Foundation

A Legacy of Giving Back

Jeanne Pettit of The Pettit Family Charitable Foundation
Donor: Pettit Family Charitable Foundation

Recipient: Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center

“Our family has been donating to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center since 1982, back when the hospital was out here in the middle of a cornfield,” says Jeanne Pettit of the Pettit Family Charitable Foundation.

Pettit & Griffin, Inc. was established in 1964 by Jeanne’s father, John Pettit, as a development and property management company in the burgeoning Washington, D.C., suburbs of Montgomery County. Jeanne and her family – siblings Dick, Steve and Barbara with nephew Brian – have carried on her father’s legacy as The Pettit Companies, which includes not only the successful business, but also a very generous family foundation that her father established in the 1980s.

“My father was a very giving person,” says Jeanne. “He really wanted to make a difference in our community—particularly in areas like healthcare, social services and education.”

Since its very first gift to Shady Grove Medical Center in 1982, The Pettit Family Charitable Foundation has supported nearly every major Shady Grove Medical Center project, always answering the call for help, whatever the department and whatever the need. Its support was instrumental in building the Pediatric Emergency Department, upgrading the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), constructing the new wing of the hospital in 2007, creating our Healing Garden and making the Aquilino Cancer Center a reality.

To say that the Pettit family has been generous to Shady Grove is an understatement. Over the years, they have contributed $380,000 to ensure that their beloved community has the very best medical care at a topnotch community hospital. In addition to their giving, Jeanne, her father John and her brother Dick have all served on the Shady Grove Medical Center Foundation board, helping to secure gifts from other generous members of our community.

Most recently, Jeanne and the Pettit Family Charitable Foundation have answered the hospital’s call to support the new NICU Family Lounge. “It’s important to respond to what the hospital staff is asking for,” says Jeanne. “The nurses expressed the need for a dedicated NICU family lounge. You have mothers who are celebrating their healthy new babies rightfully so but then you have others whose babies are struggling. The nurses saw the need for a special place where these families could support and comfort one another. The nurses said this is important, and that matters to me.”

“Shady Grove Medical Center is an organization that you can stay with and grow with,” says Jeanne. Shady Grove Medical Center has certainly grown, and thrived, with the support of The Pettit Family Charitable Foundation.
