Golf Tournament Nets $52,000 for Cancer Treatment Equipment

The Washington Adventist Hospital Foundation’s 2003 Golf Scramble raised more than $52,000 (net) toward the purchase of a new linear accelerator for the Radiation Oncology Department, announced Chris Jackson, golf benefit Chair.

The golf tournament was originally scheduled for September 19 when Hurricane Isabel stormed the east coast. However, cloudy skies did not keep away 129 participants on the October 14 make-up date at Indian Spring Country Club in Silver Spring.

Dr. and Mrs. Chan Chung (Radiation Oncology, Washington Adventist Hospital) were the event’s lead donors with an Ace level tournament sponsorship. Seventy-five corporations, businesses, and physician groups philanthropically supported Washington Adventist Hospital through the golf benefit that netted $52,293.00.

Volunteers for the special event were the Washington Adventist Hospital School of Radiography students and Adventist HealthCare employees.

The invitation to this year’s tournament pictured a photo of four men with a caption that read, “Can you beat this team?” Not this year. Team Foulger-Pratt Development, Inc. rose the challenge and defended their honor to come in first among 36 golf foursomes with a gross score of 59. The winning net score was played by the Surgitron of Maryland and Philips Medical Systems foursome coming in at 54 strokes. The day of the tournament golfers purchase more than $2,300 in mulligans to bolster their scores while benefiting the hospital. Thank you golfers!

Following 18 holes on the course, participants enjoyed an awards luncheon in the clubhouse that highlighted the state-of-the-art radiation oncology equipment that the charitable proceeds with help purchase in 2004. With the acquisition of the new linear accelerator the community will have access to the most advanced cancer treatment technology currently available in radiation treatment therapy.

This is great news for people who suffer from breast, prostate, and lung cancer, among other cancers commonly treated with radiation treatment because the new linear accelerator uses three-dimensional digital imaging to precisely treat tumors while sparing more surrounding healthy tissue and thus decreasing side-effects of treatment. The new linear accelerator will also expand treatment capacity as neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists collaborate to implement non-invasive radiation treatment options for certain types of brain lesions and vascular malformations.

Washington Adventist Hospital is grateful to all the golf tournament sponsors for their commitment to local public health. Thank you for partnering with Washington Adventist in providing remarkable health care to the community.
