Commission on Cancer Accreditation
Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is among only 30% of U.S. hospitals to be accredited with commendation as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). This distinction signifies the quality care provided to patients in the cancer programs at each hospital.
Washington Adventist Hospital is an Accredited Cancer Program with Commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
American College of Radiology (ACR)
Shady Grove’s Nuclear Medicine Services received a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT), or CAT scanning, by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The accreditation is given to facilities that provide the highest level of image quality and patient safety.
This ACR Gold Seal of Accreditation means the Nuclear Medicine department underwent a rigorous peer-review by board-certified physicians and expert medical physicists on image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
Shady Grove’s Vascular Ultrasound Laboratory is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The Shady Grove Adventist Radiation Oncology Center at Rockville is also accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO)
Washington Adventist Hospital is the first facility in the Washington Metropolitan area to be accredited by the American College of Radiation Oncology, which has a goal to ensure the highest quality care for radiation therapy patients in addition to promoting the successful clinical practice of radiation oncology.
Accredited Chest Pain Centers with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
Washington Adventist Hospital, a Cycle IV Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, a Cycle III Chest Pain Center with PCI, have been recognized by the national Society of Cardiosvascular Patient Care as exceeding rigid standards for care procedures in the treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms.
American College of Cardiology Foundation
Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital are among a select few hospitals in the country to be recognized for providing the highest quality care to heart attack patients by the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR ACTION Registry - Get With the Guidelines. Washington Adventist Hospital received the 2013 Silver Performance Achievement Award. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital earned the 2013 Gold Performance Achievement Award for the fourth straight year.

Both Shady Grove Adventist and Washington Adventist Hospitals have achieved designation as cardiac interventional centers by the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services and Systems (MIEMSS). The designation is awarded to hospitals that demonstrate the delivery of quality care in their interventional heart programs.

Maryland Patient Safety Center (MPSC) Neonatal Collaborative
Shady Grove Adventist Hospital NICU earned the Gold Medal award from the Maryland Patient Safety Center (MPSC) Neonatal Collaborative, for the quality care the hospital provides to critically ill newborns.
American Heart Association (AHA) Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target Stroke: Honor Roll
Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital have received the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target Stroke: Honor Roll from the American Heart Association (AHA) for their expert, high quality stroke care.
The Gold Plus Quality Achievement recognizes each hospital for reaching an aggressive goal of treating stroke patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care outlined by the AHA/American Stroke Association for 12 consecutive months.
AHA’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll honors both hospitals for having door-to-needle times of 60 minutes or less in at least 50 percent of patients. This is the time between when a patient arrives at the hospital and when they receive anti-clotting medication. Providing this medication quickly can reduce long-term damage and increase the chances of a full recovery.

Washington Adventist Hospital is ranked as one of the nine best surgical hospitals in Maryland by Consumer Reports, which looked at key measures including patient outcomes, such as avoiding infections, complications, readmissions and adverse events, patient experience data and hospital protocols.

Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL)
Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s Vascular Laboratory has achieved accreditations by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) for its noninvasive vascular testing in the areas of carotid ultrasound and venous ultrasound. These accreditations recognize Shady Grove Adventist’s delivery of quality care and testing to vascular patients.
Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC) and Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) Management Service Organization (MSO) State Designation
ACES (Ambulatory Care Electronic Health Records Solution) offers EHR implementation and expert guidance to affiliated physicians of Adventist HealthCare, which includes Shady Grove Adventist and Washington Adventist hospitals.
ACES has been awarded the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) Management Service Organization (MSO) State Designation. It has also achieved full accreditation with the Management Service Organization Accreditation Program (MSOAP) from the Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC).
The MHCC designation recognizes ACES’ national accreditation as an MSO. The designation also means that ACES has met a number of national and state standards intended to ensure high-quality business operations, and the existence of sound privacy and security policies.
As an EHNAC MSOAP-accredited organization, ACES was evaluated in the areas of privacy and security, technical performance, business practices and organizational resources.

The Cardiac and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Washington Adventist Hospital has been awarded the silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), making it the only hospital in Montgomery County, and one of only six in Maryland, to receive this prestigious national recognition. This three-year award marks a significant achievement in providing exceptional patient care and a healthy work environment.
The Sydney and Helen Shuman Nurse Recognition Award
Alena B. Agatep, RN, BSN, CCRN, of Washington Adventist Hospital was one of two nurses chosen nationally to win The Sydney and Helen Shuman Nurse Recognition Award given through The Mended Hearts, Inc. Mended Hearts recognizes the dedication and heartfelt support that nurses offer to heart patients during treatment and the recovery process. The Sydney and Helen Shuman Nurse Recognition Award was established to show appreciation to nurses who make a positive difference by their skill, care and presence. Agatep, a nurse on the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Washington Adventist Hospital, was nominated for the award through Mended Hearts National Capital Area chapter.
Alliance for Workplace Excellence (AWE)
Adventist HealthCare and its affiliate, LifeWork Strategies, each received the 2013 Workplace Excellence Award from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence. The awards honor organizations across the country that display an outstanding commitment to promoting professional fulfillment and personal wellness for their employees in the workplace, at home and within the community. LifeWork Strategies, which provides health and wellness services to the business community, was also honored with the 2013 Health & Wellness Trailblazer Award.
2011 Regional Breastfeeding - Friendly Workplace Recognition Award from The D.C. and Maryland Breastfeeding Coalitions
Washington Adventist Hospital received the 2011 Regional Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace Recognition Award, one of nine sites, and the only hospital in Montgomery County. The hospital’s lactation program was honored with a Silver Level award, the second highest level.
