Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Announces Plans for Major Expansion Project

Project to include expanded emergency department, space for new clinical services, more private rooms and 166,000 square feet of new space

Rockville, MD - Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has announced plans for a four-phase expansion project, the first phase of which will consist of 166,000 square feet of new space for patient care services as well as renovation of existing space. Hospital officials anticipate that phase I of this project will cost approximately $36 million.

Although the details have yet to be finalized, hospital officials expect that phase I will include:

  • Additional space for the hospital's emergency department;
  • The construction of a new patient tower;
  • Expansion of the hospital's women's services through the addition of more private, postpartum beds
  • The development of space and supporting infrastructure for the hospital's expanding cardiac, vascular and oncology services;
  • Additional private rooms for medical/surgical patients;
  • Additional operating room space.

"The volumes for our clinical services have been growing consistent with the population growth in our community, and this project is evidence of the hospital's commitment to serving the health care needs of our community," said Deborah A. Yancer, President of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. "We believe this will help fulfill a great need in our community for expanded health care services for emergency care, women's services, cardiac and vascular care, surgical services and oncology care, among others."

In addition to the approximately 166,000 square feet of new space, hospital officials plan to renovate some of 30,000 square feet of existing space. The expansion project will not interrupt patient care and will require the necessary approval from State and local regulatory officials. Hospital officials hope to begin construction in early 2002.

The expansion project already has been approved in concept by the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Governing Board.

"We will be working closely with employees, our medical staff and others as we move this project forward," said Yancer. "We're also eager for community input and support for this expansion effort. We believe Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has a strong and vibrant future serving the health care needs of our community."
