Press Release

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Becomes the Official Hospital of the Maryland Soccerplex

Germantown, MD -  Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has formed a partnership with the Maryland SoccerPlex to be the Official Hospital of the Maryland SoccerPlex.

The partnership will provide the hospital with the opportunity to directly reach Montgomery County residents. The hospital plans to use the facility as a meeting center for sports, health and family related classes and will provide literature and information to visitors throughout the year. The partnership also provides Shady Grove with signage on five of 19 SoccerPlex fields as well as other amenities.

"Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is very pleased to be affiliated with the Maryland Soccerplex which is an important asset to our community," said Deborah A. Yancer, President of Shady Grove. "We recognize and value the important role that the SoccerPlex plays in our community and we're proud to be their partner. This is a great opportunity to help educate and treat the athletes who use the facility as it relates to sports medicine or other health related conditions. This affiliation is consistent with our philosophy of taking our services out into the various communities that we serve. Recently, we also announced plans to develop an outpatient health care center in Germantown not far from where the soccerplex is located."

Shady Grove offers an array of inpatient and outpatient treatment services for children. In addition to an inpatient pediatric unit, the hospital has a pediatric intensive care unit and a pediatric emergency department, as well as other services. The hospital cares for some 25,000 pediatric emergency cases each year.

"The Maryland SoccerPlex is proud to have Shady Grove Adventist as a partner ," said Trish Heffelfinger, Executive Director of the Maryland Soccer Foundation, operator of the Maryland SoccerPlex. "It is this kind of support from our local community that has made the SoccerPlex possible. The 25,000 Montgomery County soccer players and their families are very grateful." The partnership was formed by Forum Quest, a consumer marketing firm in Baltimore, MD, responsible for developing Maryland SoccerPlex sponsorships.

The Maryland SoccerPlex opened its doors in October 2000, and is a state-of-the art soccer facility on 162 acres of land. The facility includes 18 outdoor soccer fields (24 fields by 2004), an outdoor stadium field which has seating for 3,200, and the Discovery Sports Center, an indoor multi-sport athletic and community recreation facility that accommodates two soccer fields, as well as volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, field hockey and rugby. The SoccerPlex is used year-round, and draws the top youth soccer players in the region, and in the country. It is recognized as the premiere soccer facility in our country, and has been selected to host the annual national finals of the United States Youth Soccer Association in July of 2002 and 2003, formerly held in Orlando, FL at the Disney complex.

During 2001, the SoccerPlex is expected to exceed 250,000 visitors, including youth soccer players (ages 9-19) and their families. Approximately 85% of the visitors are from the Washington metro region, and 15% are national. The SoccerPlex averages 3,500 visitors on regular league weekends, and 7,000 for tournament weekends. Professional soccer is brought to the SoccerPlex through D.C. United and Washington Freedom exhibition games, training sessions, camps, and more.
