Washington Adventist Hospital to Offer Free Cancer Screenings

Takoma Park, MD - Free cancer screenings will be offered for the public at Washington Adventist Hospital's annual Cancer Screening Day on Sunday, Oct. 12.

The Cancer Screening Day will be held in the Short Stay Unit at Washington Adventist Hospital from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The screenings for bladder, colorectal, oral, prostate and skin cancer will be offered free of charge.

Cancer Screening Day provides an opportunity for participants to determine their risk for some of the most common cancers affecting Americans. Skin cancer, the most common of all cancers, accounts for almost half of the cancers in the United States, with more than 1 million non-melanoma skin cancers detected annually. Prostate cancer is the second-most common cancer among American men; the American Cancer Society predicts more than 220,000 cases of prostate cancer will be detected in the United States in 2003.

"Early detection and treatment of these common cancers can make all the difference," said Judy Lichty, director of Prevention and Wellness for Washington Adventist Hospital. "As a community-based health care organization, we feel it is an important part of our mission to make free or low-cost screenings available to the community through events such as Cancer Screening Day."

Those interested in participating in the screening should call (800) 542-5096 to make an appointment.

Washington Adventist Hospital is licensed for 315-beds and offers a variety of health care services for the community including cardiology and cardiac surgery, radiation oncology, behavioral health services, maternity services, emergency medicine, and a host of prevention-oriented health education programs.
