Washington Adventist Hospital Announces Expanded Vision for Service to Community

Vision Focused on Improving Access, Facilities and Services for Community

The Board of Trustees for Adventist HealthCare has approved an expanded, strategic vision for Washington Adventist Hospital. This vision includes several elements that will improve access to care for all residents in the hospital's service area of lower Montgomery County, parts of Prince George's County and parts of Washington, DC. Included in this vision is a focus on under-served populations and the creation of improved health care facilities and services for the community.

"Washington Adventist Hospital has worked to serve the community faithfully for nearly 100 years. As we look to our next 100 years of service, we want to ensure that our programs, services and facilities assertively meet the growing needs of all residents in our community," said Bill Robertson, President and CEO of Adventist HealthCare. "We have aligned this vision with the needs of our community."

The strategic vision  approved by the Adventist HealthCare Board of Trustees directs:

  • Development of a health care center in the Long Branch community to improve access to care for under-served populations. A proposed location for this facility is near the intersection of Flower Avenue and Piney Branch Road.
  • Initiation of the process of moving Washington Adventist Hospital to a new campus within the hospital's current service area that reduces the hospital's impact on residential communities while enhancing the hospital's ability to meet the needs of all residents. This transition requires regulatory approval.
  • Development of a Center for Health Disparities that combines clinical care, research and health careers training for historically under-served populations within the hospital's service area. The hospital will ask a distinguished, diverse array of representatives from the African American, Asian, Latino and other communities to serve on a blue ribbon task force to advise on the development and operations of this Center.
  • A contribution to the completion of the health center/gymnasium that is part of the re-development of the Takoma Park municipal building.
  • Working with CASA de Maryland and others on a multi-year commitment to expand available health care resources to the immigrant community in lower Montgomery County.
  • Re-development of the hospital's Board of Directors to better reflect the diversity of the community served by the hospital.

"Washington Adventist Hospital is a key provider of care for patients throughout lower Montgomery County, as well as parts of Prince George's County and Washington, DC," noted Robertson. "This expanded vision for the hospital aligns our resources and services to ensure we maximize and extend our health care services to the community in the best way possible."

For several years, the hospital has been in discussions with its immediate neighbors. These discussions have focused primarily on upgrading the hospital's aging facility and adding new facilities and services on the Takoma Park campus. The hospital is located in an established residential community on a space-constrained campus with transportation challenges.

"As our discussions about the proposed, limited campus expansion progressed, we came to realize that our focus needed to be on how care should be delivered to the entire community over the next several decades," said Jere Stocks, President of Washington Adventist Hospital. "As a result, we took time out from those discussions to focus on an expanded vision of service for this hospital. We believe this will improve both access to care and the quality of services and facilities available to the community we serve."

Washington Adventist Hospital is part of Adventist HealthCare, an integrated health care delivery organization based in Rockville, Maryland, that is one of the largest employers in the state of Maryland.
