Dennis Hansen Named President of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital

Rockville , MD – Adventist HealthCare is pleased to announce the selection of Dennis Hansen as President of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md.  Hansen, who begins his new role effective today, joined Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in May 2006 as Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and has also been serving as Interim President since March.

Hansen replaces former president Deborah Yancer, who was named Chief Executive Officer of Enloe Medical Center in Chico, California in February.

"Dennis has brought a number of outstanding skills to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and is the best candidate to lead the hospital as it continues to expand and serve the community," said William G. "Bill" Robertson, President and CEO of Adventist HealthCare.  “Dennis sees the big picture and has a vision for the future.  He is also able to build strong, long-term, engaged relationships with employees, physicians and the community, and has the ability and focus to build lasting best-practice operational systems that consistently deliver great care to those we serve.”

As he takes over the leadership role at Shady Grove, Hansen plans to continue the hospital’s initiatives to create a healing environment for both patients and families while continuing its mission of serving the community.

“Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has been an important part of our community for more than 27 years.  As a community partner we are dedicated to seeking ways to improve access to healthcare,” Hansen said.  “Providing an exceptional experience for patients and their families remains a top priority.”

As part of this commitment to the patient experience, Shady Grove will celebrate the opening of its new tower later this year.  The tower, which is part of the hospital’s four-year, $99 million expansion and renovation project, will add 144 private patient beds, including 48 private postpartum rooms, a new Surgical Services Department for inpatient and outpatient cases, with 16 new operating rooms, and new space for several patient care units, including oncology, medical/surgical and orthopedics.  The project will add 207,000 square feet of space to the hospital.  An additional 50,000 square feet will be renovated in the existing hospital by 2009.

Making Shady Grove Adventist Hospital an outstanding place to work for employees and physicians is another priority for Hansen.  The hospital currently has 1,800 employees as well as 1,200 physicians on its medical staff.  In recognition of its efforts in this area, Shady Grove recently received the Workplace Excellence Award from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence for the fifth year in a row.

“It is an exciting time at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.  We are expanding our hospital to better meet the growing needs of our dynamic community,” said Hansen.  “I believe that our success in consistently providing safe, quality care is anchored in our excellent staff and physicians.”

Dennis worked for the Centura Health System in Denver, Colorado, from 1996 until he joined Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in 2006.  He was the Vice President, Chief Operating Officer at Littleton Adventist Hospital from 2002 to 2006.  Prior to that, he worked as the Administrative Director of Business Support, Outpatient Rehabilitation, Occupational Health Service and Rehabilitation Services at Porter and Littleton Adventist Hospitals.  Dennis has also worked as an Organizational Development Consultant as well as a Performance Consultant.

Hansen holds an MBA from the University of California, Irvine and a BS in Physical Therapy from Loma Linda University. He began his career as a physical therapist.  Hansen, 46, lives in Montgomery County with his wife and children.
