Free Heart-Health Screenings at Larry King Cardiac Foundation Event

Larry King, award-winning American broadcaster and host of the CNN "Larry King Live" show, is coming to Washington, D.C. for the annual Larry King Cardiac Foundation Gala, and he’s encouraging everyone to get screened for heart disease with a free, public heart-health screening on June 7, conducted by Washington Adventist Hospital and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

King, who suffers from cardiovascular disease, underwent quintuple bypass heart surgery in 1987. He established the Larry King Cardiac Foundation (LKCF) in 1988 to provide funding for life-saving treatment for individuals, who, due to limited means or no insurance, would otherwise be unable to receive the treatment and medical attention they so desperately need.

The LKCF is teaming up with Sister to Sister: Everyone Has a Heart Foundation and George Washington University Hospital to provide a free, public heart-health screening. The screening will be conducted by Washington Adventist Hospital and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital on Thursday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Foggy Bottom Metro stop, in the plaza between 23rd and 24th Streets, NW near Pennsylvania Ave., NW.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and there are more than 60 million people who suffer from the disease.

"It’s wonderful that the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, Sister to Sister and George Washington University Hospital are hosting this screening event," said Judy Lichty, direction of health and wellness for Washington Adventist Hospital and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. "Heart disease tends to be a silent killer, and many people are not aware of the symptoms. Screening saves people’s lives by encouraging them to seek early intervention."

Individuals who wish to participate in the free heart-health screening are asked to bring a photo ID. On-the-spot results and counseling will be provided. The screening will include:

  • Blood Pressure
  • Waist Circumference
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Finger stick total cholesterol, HDL and glucose
