Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Opens New Mother/Baby Unit

State-to-the-Art Space Features 48 Private Suites for New Families

Rockville, MD - Parents in Montgomery County and surrounding areas now have a new, modern space to welcome the smallest members of the family into the world with the opening of the new mother/baby unit at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.  The unit, which is the first section of Shady Grove's new 207,000-square-foot tower to open, features 48 private postpartum suites for families to rest and get acquainted while receiving the same quality, high-level care from Shady Grove's experienced care providers.

"Welcoming a baby into the world is one of life's most important moments and it deserves a very special space for the entire family.  We are proud to provide this state-of-the-art postpartum unit to our patients, staff and physicians," said Shady Grove President Dennis Hansen.  "In creating this new space and our entire tower, we worked to foster an exceptional patient experience in a healing environment with the latest features in quality care and patient safety."

The new mother/baby unit's 48 private suites, which are more than double the size of Shady Grove's previous semi-private rooms, feature private bathrooms, gliders, televisions, desks and a pull-out sleeping sofa for dads or another member of the family to stay overnight.  The new tower will also have free wireless Internet access for all patients and visitors.  In the new rooms, hospital equipment will be hidden behind moveable artwork to provide a "home" environment for patients.  The healing environment throughout Shady Grove's new tower will be enhanced by special family lounges with kitchens where families can prepare food for patients who want a reminder of home. Other elements of the unit, including lighting and colors, were selected to create a calming and healing space for patients.

Shady Grove's new tower also has several important patient safety features.  One example is the new model of care, which includes decentralized nursing stations.  This model eliminates the traditional central nurse's desk and replaces it with smaller nursing stations located throughout the unit, thereby keeping nurses closer to patients to provide more hands-on care.  Additionally, each patient room in Shady Grove's new tower features a computer for the documentation of clinical care at the patient's bedside, which improves accuracy and efficiency by ensuring immediate access to patient information for caregivers.

"Our new tower offers an exciting space where our care team can provide exceptional, high quality care to each patient at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.  The important quality and safety elements of our new tower enhance the experience of our patients, staff and physicians," notes Rebecca Beauchamp, Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nurse Executive for Shady Grove.

Shady Grove's new tower is part of the hospital's four-year, $100 million expansion and renovation project, which started in April 2005.  The project includes the new 207,000-square-foot tower as well as renovations of more than 50,000 square feet of space in the existing hospital.  The renovation project includes construction of a new neonatal intensive care unit for Shady Grove, increasing the hospital's level 3B unit to 32-38 beds, depending on the acuity of patients.

The other units moving into Shady Grove's new tower, with all private patient rooms, include oncology, orthopedics and general medical/surgical.  The first floor of the tower will house a new 100,000-square-foot surgical services department, which will be the largest in Montgomery County with 16 new operating rooms.  This unit is set to open in February 2008.
