Shady Grove Event Offers Men Free Education, Screening on Prostate Cancer, Colorectal Cancer and Heart Disease

Rockville, MD - The names of prominent men who recently faced and, in some cases, lost battles with common health conditions include NBC broadcaster Tim Russert, former White House press secretary Tony Snow and columnist Bob Novak.  The stories of these men and thousands like them serve as important reminders to all men that health education and screenings can save their lives.

On Wednesday, September 24, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital will offer free education and screening to help men in Montgomery County learn about three common health conditions -- prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and heart disease.  The free, three-hour event, called "A Focus on Men," will feature speakers on men's health, one-on-one mini consultations with medical experts and free health screenings.

"We know that in many cases, early detection and treatment can save lives.  Our goal is to help men of all ages in our community and their loved ones understand health risks that are specific to men and what can be done to maintain optimal health," explains Deb Pollak, Executive Director of Cancer Care for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Adventist HealthCare.

One important focus of the September 24 event will be prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in American men, outside of skin cancers, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American men, behind lung cancer.  Risk factors for prostate cancer can include age, family history, diet and prostate changes.  Race is another important risk factor.  For example, prostate cancer is more common in African-American men than in white men and is less common in Asian and American-Indian men.

"We want to help men in our community understand their own risk factors and the fact that screening for these common cancers is easy and takes minimal time," explains Dr. Joshua Katz, Colorectal Surgeon and Medical Director of the Biophysiology Center at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.  "Additionally, we want to educate our community about lifestyle changes that can help men prevent some of these health conditions in the future."

Men who attend the September 24 event at Shady Grove will be offered a free prostate cancer screening test (blood PSA test) as well as free screenings for body composition and blood pressure.

Research has also shown that women play an important role in men's health.  As a result, area women are invited to Shady Grove's event to participate in the screenings and obtain valuable health information for men in their lives.

"Whether they are a wife, daughter, sister or simply a friend, we know that women are often the ones who can influence men to take charge of their health," notes Pollak.  "We encourage the women in our community to come out on September 24 either with a man or alone to learn and help us educate our community about these important health topics."
