Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Receives Three-Year Approval with Commendation as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program

American College of Surgeons Notes Excellence of Program during Site Survey

Rockville, MD - Shady Grove Adventist Hospital's cancer program has been granted a three-year approval with commendation by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), a designation held by only 25 percent of U.S. hospitals. This prestigious designation, granted by the ACoS's Commission on Cancer (CoC), highlights the excellence and high quality of Shady Grove's cancer program.

"Providing high quality, compassionate care is a top priority for us at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. We are pleased to receive this important recognition for our comprehensive oncology program," explains Dennis Hansen, President of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. "This designation means that cancer patients in our community can receive the care that they need close to home."

In order to receive approval by the Commission on Cancer hospitals must demonstrate a commitment to providing the highest level of quality cancer care through a rigorous evaluation process and performance review. The process includes an on-site evaluation during which the hospital is required to demonstrate compliance with multiple standards that represent the broad scope of the cancer program such as cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement. In granting Shady Grove its fourth (continuous) cancer program approval, the CoC noted the cancer program's organization, "scope of high quality care" and "implemented changes that improve access to care and outcomes."

"Shady Grove's comprehensive cancer program is lead by a multidisciplinary team that works together to coordinate the best possible care for our patients and community," notes Debra Pollak, Executive Director of Cancer Services for Adventist HealthCare and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

CoC approval is nationally recognized by organizations such as The Joint Commission, American Cancer Society, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the National Quality Forum and the National Cancer Institute as having established performance measures for the provision of high-quality cancer care. Currently in the United States, 80 percent of cancer patients are diagnosed and treated at a CoC-approved cancer program. Shady Grove has been approved as a comprehensive community cancer program for the past 10 years.
