Shady Grove Adventist to Host Free Cancer Screening Event to Raise Awareness of Prevention and Early Detection

Health Insurance Counseling and Registration Also Available as Part of National, State Outreach

Rockville, Md. - Shady Grove Adventist Hospital will hold a free community cancer screening event on Sunday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. During the annual event, the hospital will also provide free health insurance counseling and registration to uninsured residents as part of national Cover the Uninsured Week and a Maryland hospital initiative called "Enroll Maryland."

Community members will have the opportunity to obtain free screenings for seven types of cancer: bladder, colorectal, oral, prostate, skin, thyroid and breast (clinical breast exams) cancers. The hospital is located at 9901 Medical Center Drive, Rockville, Maryland.

"Regular screening is critical for detection and removal of precancerous growths, as well as the diagnosis of cancers at an early stage, when they are most treatable," said Debra Pollak, Executive Director, Cancer Care Services for Adventist HealthCare.

In addition to the screenings, insurance coverage specialists will be on hand to provide counseling and enrollment into county, state and federal assistance programs for residents who lack health insurance. It is estimated that in Maryland, 800,000 people do not have health-care insurance. Many of these people are eligible for low-cost or free health-care coverage through medical assistance.

The cancer screening event is just one of many health screening and education events provided to the community each year by Adventist HealthCare and its Rockville hospital, Shady Grove Adventist.
"Our organization's mission is to improve the health of people and communities," explains Judy Lichty, Regional Director of Health and Wellness for Adventist HealthCare. "The cancer screening event provides the opportunity to help educate our community about early detection of cancer and provide free screenings for several types of cancer. We are also pleased to offer those in our community without insurance coverage access to services and resources."

To register for the cancer screening, call 1-800-542-5096. Walk-ins are welcome during the screening event. You do not need to register to see an insurance coverage specialist. Assistance will be available in English and Spanish.

Cover the Uninsured Week is a national effort to raise awareness of and call for solutions for the 46 million Americans, including 9 million children, living without health insurance.
