Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Opens State-of-the-Art Cancer Treatment Center in Germantown

New Facility Expands Access to Radiation Oncology Treatment for Upcounty Residents

Rockville, MD – Cancer patients living in upper Montgomery County have improved access to an important treatment with this week’s opening of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s new radiation oncology center in Germantown. The new facility, which is conveniently located just off I-270 and Route 118, will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to provide the latest advances in treatment to cancer patients.

More then 60 percent of patients with cancer are treated with radiation therapy, which is used to treat a wide range of cancers including the most prevalent – breast, prostate and lung cancers. These patients receive daily treatments, each lasting 5 – 10 minutes, sometimes for up to eight weeks.

“We are pleased to expand convenient access to this important cancer treatment for our upcounty community,” said Dennis Hansen, President of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. “The new Shady Grove Adventist Radiation Oncology Center, which includes the most modern technology, is just one example of our work to bring health care and services to upper Montgomery County.”

The radiation treatment center has advanced equipment including a Linear Accelerator, which utilizes the latest technology for providing Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) using cone beam CT technology.

“The state-of-the-art equipment will allow our physicians to pinpoint and precisely target each patient’s tumor, sparing normal tissue from being impacted by the radiation. This technology allows our patients to directly benefit from treatment using the latest advances in cancer treatment,” said Dr. Donald Bridges, who along with Dr. Catherine Salem and Dr. Anu Singh, will staff Germantown as well as the current Rockville site on West Gude Drive.

The Shady Grove Adventist Radiation Oncology Center at Germantown is the second radiation oncology center operated by Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. The other center, which is located in Rockville, is one of only 15 – 20% of treatment centers nationwide that hold a certification from the American College of Radiology (ACR). The certification highlights the quality care provided to those undergoing treatment.

“Our radiation oncology center in Germantown is an integral part of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s comprehensive cancer care services,” said Amy Carrier, Associate Vice President of Clinical Services for Adventist HealthCare. “This new facility, which makes cancer treatment more convenient for those in upper Montgomery County, is part of our integrated and multidisciplinary treatment and support programs for cancer patients.”

For the past 13 years, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has been accredited as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons, in recognition of offering the best in cancer care.
