Washington Adventist Hospital Teams with Walgreens to Provide Prescriptions to Patients

New Bedside Delivery Service Helps Improve Patient Safety and Recovery

Takoma Park, MDWashington Adventist Hospital and Walgreens have teamed up to provide patients with bedside delivery of their prescription medications to help ease the transition from hospital to home.

Washington Adventist Hospital is the first hospital in Montgomery County working with Walgreens to offer bedside prescription delivery. “We are so pleased to work with Walgreens to provide a valuable service to our patients in order to speed their recovery and continue to help them maintain and improve their health,” said Joyce Portela, President of Washington Adventist Hospital.

Patients who need medication after being discharged from Washington Adventist Hospital can choose to have the prescriptions delivered by a Walgreens pharmacy technician so the medications are in hand when they leave the hospital. Walgreens completes the request for any necessary insurance authorizations, fills the prescription and delivers the order directly to the patient. In addition, a Walgreens pharmacist will place a follow up call to the patient 48 hours after discharge to answer questions about the medication and provide patient education.

“After discharge, many patients go straight home to continue their recovery and don’t get their prescriptions filled right away. Delays in taking prescribed medicines or missing a dose can result in slowed recovery or even a return to the hospital,” said Tom Sweeney, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Washington Adventist Hospital. “This program helps ensure the patient has the medication needed to stay on the road to recovery after they leave the hospital and provides an important resource if the patient has any questions about their prescriptions.”

Patient benefits include:

  • Free patient hotline for medication consultation with the pharmacist,
  • Fast, bedside delivery of physician-ordered prescriptions,
  • Time-saving option that makes transition from hospital to home easier and
  • Improved compliance with taking prescribed medicines to speed recovery,

“Waiting at the pharmacy for my prescriptions to be filled was the last thing I wanted to do after leaving the hospital,” said Jessica Tiggs, a patient at Washington Adventist Hospital who recently used the new program. “This service was so convenient. Not only did I get all my medications before being discharged, but I had a consultation with the pharmacist who was so patient in answering all my questions about my new prescriptions.”

“Every day, we offer convenience and accessibility to the communities we serve,” said Walgreens market vice president Darron Briscoe. “This bedside medication delivery service takes that care to another level.”

Walgreens recently opened a new store at1329 E. University Blvd. in Takoma Park. Patients can refill their medication at any Walgreens location, or transfer their prescription to a pharmacy that is most convenient for them.
