Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Designated High-level Chest Pain Center

Accreditation Recognizes High-quality Care Provided to Heart Attack Patients

Rockville, MDShady Grove Adventist Hospital has been nationally recognized for providing a higher level of care and outcomes in treating heart attack patients. The Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) has granted the hospital accreditation as a Cycle III Chest Pain Center with PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention, or angioplasty).

Only four hospitals in all of Maryland hold a cycle III chest pain accreditation, which is currently the highest designation granted.

“We are pleased to be recognized for the exceptional care provided by our cardiac and emergency teams,” said Dennis Hansen, president of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. “Achieving this accreditation demonstrates that Shady Grove Adventist Hospital exceeds the rigid standards set by the Society of Chest Pain Centers to ensure patients in our community get the life-saving treatment they need when having a heart attack.”

Each year, more than 600,000 Americans die from heart disease, making it the leading cause of death in the U.S. More than five-million people visit U.S. hospitals each year with chest pain.

“Time is heart muscle. The sooner a heart attack patient is treated, the better the chance for survival and a quick recovery,” explained Thomas Odar, M.D., FACC, medical director of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s Chest Pain Center. “That means calling 9-1-1 and clearly explaining your symptoms. This allows for care coordination to begin in the field, with paramedics working with our cardiologists, emergency physicians, nurse specialists and technologists to get the right, rapid treatment for those suffering from chest pain the moment they arrive at the hospital.”

In 2009, Shady Grove Adventist became the first hospital in Montgomery County to achieve Cycle II accreditation. Every three years, a hospital’s chest pain care protocols are reviewed and measured by SCPC’s latest evidence-based best practices to obtain the next cycle level of accreditation.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s Cardiac Services also have been recognized with several other national and state quality designations, including back to back Gold Performance Achievement Awards from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Foundation and the American Heart Association (AHA) and Cardiac Interventional Center (CIC) designation by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS), PCI Waiver site by the Maryland Healthcare Commission (MHCC), and Mission: Lifeline Silver Performance Achievement Award by the AHA.

The Society of Chest Pain Centers is a non-profit international society dedicated to reducing heart attack deaths with rapid, early treatment – when treatments are most effective – as well as teaching the public to recognize and react to early symptoms of a possible heart attack.
