Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital, Montgomery County Public Schools Partner for Athlete Concussion Program

Rockville, Md. – Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland is partnering with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) on a new concussion program for county high schools. The partnership with MCPS, which is expected to begin this fall once the county Board of Education approves the program tonight, requires all high school athletes to undergo a baseline exam prior to their respective sports season.

“We are pleased to partner with Montgomery County schools to improve concussion care and ease diagnosis for student athletes,” says Brent Reitz, Vice President and Administrator of Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital. “This program is part of our mission of improving the health of our community.”

Through the program Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital will administer testing at 13 of the 25 Montgomery County high schools, providing exams to more than 600 athletes in each school.

The exams will assess neurocognitive functions including learning, problem solving and memory skills as well as concentration ability. Testing will be conducted using a web-based, scientifically validated computerized tool called ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment Cognitive Test). In the event that an injury occurs, the exams will be used in comparison with post-injury tests.

“A concussion is a type traumatic brain injury,” says Shital Pavawalla, Ph.D., neuropsychologist and clinical director of the Concussion Assessment and Management Program at Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland. “It is vital that anyone who thinks they may have a concussion undergo timely evaluation and appropriate care to ensure a safe return to play and daily activities. The baseline testing serves as an important tool for assisting with diagnosis and treatment planning."

Earlier this year, Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital implemented a Concussion Assessment and Management Program at its Rockville location. The comprehensive program offers concussion diagnosis and treatment for adults ages 14 or older who have incurred a head injury from sports, motor vehicle accidents, falls or other head trauma. Patients are treated by a multi-disciplinary team, including a neuropsychologist, physical therapist and a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, called a physiatrist.

Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital is the only hospital in a five-state region to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International in all four specialty areas – brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and stroke.

Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland is the first and only acute rehabilitation hospital in Montgomery County. Services include comprehensive rehabilitation programs for brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, strokes, amputations, orthopedic injuries and surgeries, sports- related injuries, work-related injuries, cardiopulmonary conditions and neurological disorders. Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland is part of the Adventist HealthCare, which includes hospitals, home health agencies and other health care services.
