Local Employers Receive “Flu Fighter” Awards from Adventist HealthCare, LifeWork Strategies

Employers in Maryland, Virginia and D.C. demonstrate commitment to fighting flu

Rockville, MDAdventist HealthCare and LifeWork Strategies are pleased to recognize local employers in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia that are helping to fight the flu in their workplace with the second annual Flu Fighter awards. The 36 winners of the 2012 awards are being recognized for their efforts to protect the health of their employees and our community.

"We are excited to recognize local business as Flu Fighters for demonstrating their commitment to a healthy and productive workplace by offering annual flu vaccinations and other wellness programs to their employees," said Marta Brito Perez, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer for Adventist HealthCare. "Supporting employees in improving their physical, mental and spiritual health is both fiscally responsible and the right thing to do. Congratulations to all of the winners."

To be considered for the Flu Fighter award, employers were required to submit an application detailing their actions to keep their employees healthy. Each employer received points based on their responses to questions regarding their policies and practices aimed at protecting their workforce and the community from flu. All award recipients offered a flu vaccination clinic at their office, while a majority covered the cost of the vaccine for employees. Each award winner also provided resources to employees, such as paid sick leave, hand sanitizer, hand-washing posters, and surface cleaner in the workplace to prevent the spread of the flu. Many of the recipients also had a formal workplace policy on sick leave and return to work, specific to the flu and the contagious illness.

“I believe there is no intervention more important for our health than to vaccinate against influenza,” said Dr. Jonathan Plotsky, MD. “I congratulate the awardees who, by their successes, have shown us where we need to go. I applaud their success in reaching out from hospitals and doctors’ offices, to schools and work places so that there are fewer barriers against influenza vaccination.”
