Adventist HealthCare to Open Urgent Care Centers

Organization to partner with Centra Care of Florida for New Sites Throughout Region

Gaithersburg, MD - Adventist HealthCare today announced plans to open new urgent care centers in the region beginning late 2014. The Gaithersburg-based health-care system has partnered with Centra Care, a leader in urgent care with 24 centers in Florida. The initial three centers will be located in Germantown, Rockville and Laurel, Maryland.

“We are delighted to partner with Centra Care, experts in providing quality urgent care, to expand our services in the region,” said Terry Forde, interim president and CEO for Adventist HealthCare. “These new centers will allow us to meet a growing need for health-care options for non-life threatening injuries and illnesses. Plus, they will be convenient not only for patients, but also for businesses that require corporate health services.”

The new urgent care centers, to be called Centra Care, Adventist HealthCare Urgent Care, will offer expert, quality and convenient care for adults and children in Montgomery, and Prince George’s counties. The new facilities will be free-standing buildings with easy access to parking. Additionally, they will feature online appointment capabilities, walk-in appointments, on-site lab work, x-rays, EKG, physicals and immunizations. Conditions treated at the centers will include a wide range of illnesses and conditions, such as common viruses, infections, stomach & digestive conditions, orthopedic injuries, asthma, allergies and various common skin conditions.

Along with offering a wide variety of urgent care services to the community Centra Care will also provide comprehensive business health services to local area businesses. The services that will be provided by the centers will be workers’ compensation, drug testing services, health risk appraisals, occupational health examinations, on-site lab screenings, Department of Transportation examinations, and other employment physicals.

“Centra Care is pleased to bring expanded access to quality and convenient urgent care to Maryland residents and businesses,” said Scott Brady, MD, president and senior medical director of Centra Care. “Our team is confident that the new facilities will build on Adventist HealthCare’s hundred-plus years of serving the community.”

Urgent Care centers have grown in popularity in the last several years in response to the changing health-care environment. Emergency room visits can be costly for consumers, depending on their insurance coverage, and can have long wait times, particularly for more minor illnesses and injuries. Urgent care centers offer an affordable, convenient alternative for non-emergent health situations while also taking the burden off busy emergency departments. A 2009 Rand Corp. study, reported by The American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine, found 14 percent to 27 percent of emergency department visits could have been treated at urgent care centers, saving up to $4 million a year in health care costs.
