Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center Achieves Maryland Performance Excellence Award

Rockville, MDAdventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, part of the Gaithersburg-based Adventist HealthCare system, has achieved the Silver award through the Maryland Performance Excellence Awards (MPEA) program. The MPEA program identifies, recognizes and highlights organizations with role model performance.

“We are pleased to receive this state recognition for our ongoing work to provide world class care to a world class community,” says John Sackett, president of Shady Grove Medical Center and executive vice president and chief operating officer of Adventist HealthCare. “Participating in the MPEA helps us identify opportunities to improve our organization.”

This was the first year that Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center participated in the MPEA. In addition to the application, participants must undergo site reviews.

The Silver award recognizes organizations that demonstrate an effective, systematic approach responsive to the basic requirements of many criteria items. It represents organizations that have evidence of systematic leadership practices, customer focus and a process for strategic direction. In addition, it recognizes information systems that allow for fact-based decision making, as well as human resources support that contributes to employee growth and development.

MPEA uses the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence as the basis for the award. Baldrige is a national program committed to improving the performance of U.S. organizations.

Last week, the Joint Commission named Shady Grove Medical Center as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® for 2013. The hospital is among 18 in Maryland to earn this national distinction for 2013 performance – and one of 12 state hospitals that demonstrated excellence in processes to improve care for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgery.
In addition, this past spring, Shady Grove Medical Center became the first hospital in the state to achieve the international breastfeeding designation, Baby-Friendly, through the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. Shady Grove Medical Center celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.

Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, a not-for-profit, 305-bed acute care facility in Rockville, Md., is part of Adventist HealthCare’s system of healthcare services. Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center is nationally recognized in cancer care, cardiac and vascular services, as well as orthopedics and joint replacement. The facility is the first in the state and one of only a few hundred in the country to hold an international designation for breastfeeding and maternity care. Our mission is to demonstrate God’s care by improving the health of people and communities through a ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing.
