Sixth Annual Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day

More than 700 Students to Participate in Hands-On Learning Activities

Rockville, MDAdventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center is participating in the sixth annual Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day in an effort to encourage children to pursue medical and scientific career paths. More than 15 area companies will participate, offering hands-on activities and learning opportunities on Friday, October 24, 2014.

“We recognize the importance of educating our youth so that they grow to make a positive difference in our community,” says John Sackett, president of Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center and executive vice president & chief operating officer of Adventist HealthCare. “We are pleased to host this event again this year as we create excitement among children in our community about science and medicine.”

More than 700 seventh-graders from Earle B. Wood Middle School in Rockville and Roberto W. Clemente Middle School in Germantown, both part of the Montgomery County Public Schools system, will attend.

At Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, students will learn how medical professionals use modern technology in emergency situations to save lives. Technology demonstrations will include heart monitors, defibrillators, pulse monitors and ventilators. Students will also tour the Pediatric Emergency Department, Montgomery County’s first full-service emergency department specifically for kids.

Other companies participating this year include: BioReliance; Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute; Institute for Bioscience & Biotechnology Research; J. Craig Venter Institute; Johns Hopkins University Wet Lab; NIH Chemical Genomics Center; Sanaria; TruBios; the University of Maryland School of Nursing; the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy; Johns Hopkins University Center for Biotechnology Education; Salisbury University; Rockville Science Center; TissueGene; MdBio Foundation; Qiagen; Montgomery College; Vaxin; and MedImmune.

Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, a not-for-profit, 305-bed acute care facility in Rockville, Md., is part of Adventist HealthCare’s system of healthcare services.
