Two Adventist HealthCare Facilities Earn LEED Gold Certification for Energy Efficiency

Corporate Office, Cancer Center honored by U.S. Green Building Council

Gaithersburg, MD - Adventist HealthCare’s corporate office in Gaithersburg and the Adventist HealthCare Aquilino Cancer Center in Rockville have been awarded LEED® Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, one of the highest awards possible for energy efficiency.

LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for designing high-performance green buildings.

“This certification is another example of Adventist HealthCare’s core value of Stewardship in using our resources,” said Terry Forde, president and CEO. “We continually strive to provide the highest level of care for our community and take personal responsibility for the efficient and effective accomplishment of our mission.”

Adventist HealthCare, an integrated, healthcare delivery organization based in Gaithersburg, Md., is one of the largest employers in the state of Maryland, with approximately 6,000 employees. Its energy efficiency programs and comprehensive approach to green building standards are guided by The Walker Group, which is headquartered In Bethesda, Md.

During the interior construction in 2012 of Adventist HealthCare’s new corporate offices off Clopper Road, several sustainable and efficiency opportunities were utilized along with the goal of ensuring LEED compliance. This includes using 100-percent Energy Star-rated appliances, developing a highly efficient lighting plan, maximizing energy efficiency opportunities, recycling waste during construction to minimize carbon emissions, and using low-emitting materials (i.e., for paint, furniture, flooring) to improve indoor air quality.

The Aquilino Cancer Center, a joint venture between RMJ Development Group and Adventist HealthCare, is located next to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. It provides a full range of clinical services that include diagnostic, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, pain and symptom management, as well as clinical trials in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The Center’s Gold certification was achieved by implementing energy efficient design and construction techniques for lighting, water and material use, as well as implementing a variety of other sustainable strategies including a green roof.

“We are extremely proud of the opportunity to work with Adventist HealthCare to deliver this much-needed cancer center while achieving such a high level of energy efficiency,” said John Rhoad, Managing Principal of RMJ Development.

The RMJ Development Group, LLC is a multi-disciplinary regional real estate development firm with headquarters in McLean, Virginia.  RMJ’s focus is the development of high quality mixed-use projects, health care facilities, active-adult lifestyle communities, multi-family projects, commercial properties and land development.

Adventist HealthCare, the first and largest healthcare system in Montgomery County, Maryland, offers a full range of health and wellness services to the community including acute-hospital care, rehabilitation, mental and behavioral health services, home care, health education, a physician network and wellness services for businesses.
