Bariatric Program at Shady Grove Medical Center Achieves Comprehensive Center Accreditation

Rockville, MD – The Bariatric Surgery Program at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center has once again received Comprehensive Center Accreditation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This accreditation acknowledges the Shady Grove team’s commitment to safety and quality for our metabolic and bariatric surgery patients.

A bariatric surgical center achieves accreditation from MBSAQIP following a rigorous review process. To receive the accreditation, Shady Grove demonstrated to examiners that the hospital maintains top quality facilities, caregivers and standards of practice for bariatric procedures.

“Our team is thrilled to receive continued accreditation from MBSAQIP,” said Barry Greene, MD, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Shady Grove. “Since 2007, our bariatric team has demonstrated excellent outcomes with few complications for our patients. In fact, Shady Grove is nationally recognized as having among the lowest complication rate in the country for bariatric surgery. We understand how being overweight can be overwhelming and affect all aspects of life and everyone at our hospital is committed to giving our bariatric patients a better quality of life.”

Obesity is the No. 1 cause of preventable deaths in the United States. The Bariatric Surgery program at Shady Grove works to offer hope to many who struggle with weight loss. Bariatric surgery, also referred to as weight loss surgery, reduces the size of the stomach, helping to decrease the amount of food a person can eat, and helping them feel full longer. The results can be dramatic, with people who have had the surgery losing an average of 60-70 percent of their excess body weight in 12-18 months.

Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, a not-for-profit, 290-bed acute care facility in Rockville, Md., is part of Adventist HealthCare’s system of healthcare services. Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center is nationally recognized in cancer care, cardiac and vascular services, as well as orthopedics and joint replacement. The facility is the first in the state and one of only a few hundred in the country to hold an international designation for breastfeeding and maternity care. Our mission is to demonstrate God’s care by improving the health of people and communities through a ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing.
