Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center Welcomes Its First Baby of 2016

Baby Boy Born at 1:31 a.m. New Year's Day

Rockville, Md. – The new year brought a new addition for a Derwood, Md., family at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. The hospital’s Birth Center welcomed its first baby of 2016 at 1:31 a.m. on Jan. 1, a boy weighing 8 lbs. 12 oz. Both mom and baby are resting and doing well.

The baby is among the first born in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area in 2016.

“We are happy to welcome Shady Grove Medical Center’s first baby of 2016,” said Kathy Dallas, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services. “We enjoy celebrating each of our new arrivals. Our doctors and staff look forward to special moments with many families in our area this year.”

As the first baby born at Shady Grove in 2016, the New Year’s baby and his parents will receive a special gift from the hospital – a large basket of gifts donated or made by the nurses in the Birth Center, including handmade towels, blankets, hats, booties and many other baby essentials.

Shady Grove Medical Center delivers approximately 5,000 babies each year. For babies who need specialized care when they arrive, Shady Grove has a Level IIIb neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), one of the highest possible ratings attainable. Shady Grove was the first hospital in Maryland to achieve Baby-Friendly designation through the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for breastfeeding education and support. The Birth Center is staffed with all board-certified lactation consultants, an achievement awarded with the first International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Care Award in Maryland. The hospital also has the area’s first and only birth advisor – a professional nurse who provides free counseling and birth planning services for parents-to-be.

Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, a not-for-profit, 290-bed acute care facility in Rockville, Md., is part of Adventist HealthCare’s system of healthcare services. Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center is nationally recognized in cancer care, cardiac and vascular services, as well as orthopedics and joint replacement. The facility is the first in the state and one of only a few hundred in the country to hold an international designation for breastfeeding and maternity care. Our mission is to demonstrate God’s care by improving the health of people and communities through a ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing.
