Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Is First in State to Obtain International Award for Lactation Care

Rockville, MD – Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has become the first hospital in Maryland to receive the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Care Award.  The international award recognizes the exceptional education and support the hospital’s clinical team provides to breastfeeding families.

All lactation consultants in Shady Grove Adventist’s mother/baby unit are IBCLC nurses who specialize in clinical management of breastfeeding.  The IBCLC credential is the only one globally-accepted for professional lactation services and requires a rigorous recertification process every five years.

“We are pleased to be recognized for our quality lactation support,” said Dennis Hansen, president of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.  “This international award demonstrates our commitment to providing an important service to families in our community.”

The IBCLC Care Award is granted by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and International Lactation Consultant Association.

To receive the award, a health-care facility must demonstrate that it:
•    Hires one or more lactation consultants with IBCLC credentialing,
•    Offers a dedicated lactation program 5 – 7 days a week,
•    Provides training for medical staff who care for new mothers and infants,
•    Initiates projects that promote, protect and support breastfeeding.

“We are proud to provide skilled and internationally-certified lactation consultants seven days a week in our mother/baby unit to support mothers and help them get nursing off to a good start,” said Terry Francis, Director of Perinatal Services at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Shady Grove Adventist offers daily breastfeeding classes and support groups while new mothers are in the hospital, in addition to weekday phone support and a free weekly support group through Adventist HealthCare called B.E.S.T. (Breastfeeding Education, Support and Togetherness) for when mothers are back home.  All are staffed by a lactation consultant.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital delivers 5,000 babies each year and is home to a Level III-B Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, one of the highest designations granted to these units.
