My Mother's Care

Julia Kiamos, 89 years old, had been admitted to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center a number of times over the years. But this stay was different. Her family knew that she would not come home.

Julia Kiamos lived with her daughter Polly in Germantown. She loved birds, loved feeding them and watching them. And for as long as she could manage it, she loved traveling. Over the years, Polly, her brother Constantine and his family had taken Julia to Colorado, Florida, even Hawaii.

But at 89, Julia was suffering. She was fighting a number of illnesses and conditions - Crohn’s disease, emphysema, osteoporosis and lately, increasing dementia.

Polly knew that her mother needed more care than she could offer. Her mother had become weak and couldn’t stand. In May, 2005, Polly and Constantine brought Julia to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.

It wasn’t the first time - Julia’s illnesses had required many other stays at the hospital. But this time was different. Polly and the rest of her family knew they were saying good-bye to their mother.

"They were so understanding, and showered her with comfort and kindness no matter what she handed them," Polly remembers. “They went out of their way to make the whole family comfortable. And I know it’s not easy dealing with family members who at times are very emotional."

It especially touched her that the staff "never thought of us as 'customers’ or even ‘patients.’ We were family." Julia died at the hospital on June 1, 2005. Later, in a letter to the hospital, Polly wrote:

"On behalf of my brother and his family and me, we would all like to thank everyone for the many kindnesses and thoughtfulness shown to us during our mother’s stay. Thank you for such a fine hospital. Because of Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, this is a better place to live."
