My Second Home

Something wasn’t right. Marcie Huntley was recovering from surgery, but she was still in pain. Within 48 hours, she found herself at the Emergency Department of Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. And for the next six months, Marcie had a second home.

The diagnosis? Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia - a severe blood cancer that rarely occurs in adults, and can be very dangerous. Treatment included immediate chemotherapy and extensive time in the hospital. She was admitted that very day.

The next six months at Shady Grove were hard for Marcie, but perhaps even harder for her family - her 18-year-old son, Steven, 27-year-old daughter, Tosha, and Tosha’s two young children, Haley and Korey.

Her illness took a toll on everyone, especially her son, who was faced with the prospect of losing his mother. But she thanks the staff for caring for her family too. "They did a wonderful job of explaining my treatment to my children and what everything meant."

Five-year-old Haley, in fact, came to think of her room in 2 West as her grandmother’s new home.

Fortunately, it was only her second home for a while. By August, tests indicated her leukemia had gone into remission. In February, 2006, Marcie returned to work full-time.

Marcie’s recovery was gratifying. She faced her cancer with strength and determination, while comforting all those around her. Her positive attitude triumphed over her cancer. And Marcie is grateful, too, for the support of her family and her hospital.

"All the oncology nurses were terrific, simply amazing," she says. "Thank you for giving me my life back. Thank you for giving me my family back. I’ll never forget my second home."
