Breast Cancer

If you’re among the 12 percent of U.S. women who develop breast cancer, rest assured that survival rates are rising thanks to earlier detection and personalized treatment. At Adventist HealthCare, you’ll find the full range of breast cancer services—from screening and diagnosis to treatment and recovery—so you can enjoy the best possible outcome of care.

NAPBC Accreditation Means Exceptional Care

National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)Three Adventist HealthCare locations—Shady Grove Medical Center, Shady Grove Breast Center and Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center—have earned recognition from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).

The accreditation means you’ll experience benefits such as:

  • A highly qualified interdisciplinary team, including a patient navigator—your personal guide and advocate
  • An emphasis on minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment options that reduce pain and recovery time
  • Extensive educational resources that help you understand your condition
  • A survivorship care plan that helps you stay healthy after treatment

Comprehensive Breast Imaging Services

Take advantage of the full range of screening and diagnostic imaging services at Adventist HealthCare Breast Centers, including:

  • 3-D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) – Provides high-quality images that help your radiologist determine whether part of your tissue needs to be checked for cancer
  • Breast MRI with computer-aided detection (CAD) – Increases the accuracy of your diagnosis
  • Breast ultrasound – Helps detect breast cancer that might not be visible with mammography
  • Full-field digital mammography – Gives you results at the time of your mammogram, so you don’t have to wait
  • Stereotactic, ultrasound-guided and MRI-guided biopsies – Use images to precisely identify suspicious breast tissue from which a medical professional removes a sample for testing
  • Free breast cancer screenings for underinsured Montgomery County residents who are at least 40

Breast Imaging Center of Excellence

Rest assured you’ll get superior imaging care because Shady Grove Breast Center, located on the campus of Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, is designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). That means you’ll work with extensively trained staff who follow thorough measures to ensure you get high-quality images, stay safe and benefit from follow-up care.

Treating Breast Cancer

Your personalized recommendations for breast cancer treatment may include:

MammoSite®: Quick Radiation Therapy

If you’re diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and get a lumpectomy—surgical removal of a tumor—your doctor may recommend following up with MammoSite, a form of accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI). To help prevent cancer from recurring, your doctor uses a thin tube called a catheter to temporarily place a radioactive seed in the space where the tumor was. You’ll make just five to 10 visits to your physician for MammoSite treatment.

Genetic Testing

If you have a family history of breast cancer, genetic testing at Adventist HealthCare can help you find out whether you carry a mutated BRCA1, BRCA2 or PALB2 gene that increases your risk of breast cancer. A nurse will draw a sample of your blood for the test. If results are positive, your doctor may recommend you get mammograms more often or consider preventive treatments that could reduce your odds of developing breast cancer.
