Cancer Screenings & Diagnosis

Cancer doesn’t always present symptoms in its early stages. You can help increase the effectiveness of cancer treatment if you catch the disease early through regular screenings at Adventist HealthCare.

If one of your screenings reveals abnormalities, you can follow up with Adventist HealthCare’s wide range of diagnostic procedures.

Community Cancer Screening Programs

Your health is important to us. It’s why we offer community cancer screening programs throughout the year at Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center and at Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital.

But you don’t have to wait for a community event to get your screening. You can schedule a cancer screening at any time at Adventist HealthCare. Ask your primary care doctor what screenings are right for you.

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal, or colon, cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., but is the most preventable cancer. Protect your health with a free colonoscopy, the best way to find and remove precancerous polyps (abnormal tissue) from your large intestine and reduce the risk of cancer developing.

You qualify for a FREE colon cancer screening at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center or Washington Adventist Hospital if you:

  • Are 50 years of age or older
  • Live in Montgomery County, Md.
  • Have no or limited health insurance

To apply for the screening or get more information, contact Ana Munoz-Cruz, at 301-315-3507 or acruz2@adventisthealthcare.com.

The Montgomery County Cancer Crusade sponsors the county-based cancer screening program and will provide navigation services to guide you through any follow-up care you need after the screening.

Breast Cancer Screening

All women over 40 should receive a mammogram and clinical breast exam annually. Adventist HealthCare provides FREE breast cancer screening services such as mammograms, diagnostic procedures, treatment and patient navigation to women in need.

You’re eligible for free services at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center or Washington Adventist Hospital if you:

  • Are 40 years of age or older
  • Have no or limited health insurance
  • Live in Maryland
  • Meet the federal poverty guidelines

For more information, contact Ana Munoz-Cruz, at 301-315-3507 or acruz2@adventisthealthcare.com.

The breast cancer screening program is funded by the Avon Foundation, Montgomery County Health Department’s Women’s Cancer Control Program, Primary Care Coalition, and the State of Maryland’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Program.

About the Breast Cancer Screening Program

Since 1993, the Breast Cancer Screening Program at Shady Grove Medical Center and Washington Adventist Hospital has been helping low income, uninsured women 40 years and older in the Maryland area fight the battle against breast cancer. The purpose of the program is provide free screening services to underserved women who may otherwise do without these services due to income and insurance limitations. The aim is to make screening, diagnostic and treatment services accessible to all women to reduce the number of deaths related to breast cancer.

Lung Cancer Screening

If you have smoked heavily, you may qualify for a low-dose CT lung cancer screening, the most powerful detection tool available. Find out whether you meet the criteria for the lung cancer screening, which minimizes your radiation exposure. Then, call 240-826-6297 to learn about upcoming screening dates.

Comprehensive Cancer Diagnosis Procedures

Your doctor may recommend additional tests to diagnose or rule out cancer based on your screening results. Those tests vary by condition but could include:

  • Biopsy – Tests a sample of tissue for cancer cells
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan – Creates 3-D images of the inside of your body using X-rays to help your doctor identify cancerous tumors
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – Uses magnets to create images of your soft tissue to help you doctor identify cancerous tumors and the location of your cancer
  • Mammogram – Produces an X-ray image of your breast to help your doctor locate and assess tumors
  • Lab tests – Give your doctor insight into your condition through samples of your urine, blood, bone marrow and more
