Integrative Medicine

At the Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center, you have access to the region’s only Integrative Medicine Program. The first of its kind in the community, our Program is patient-centered, integrating traditional cancer care with evidence informed complementary therapies to treat the whole person - body, mind and spirit. Our program helps your body fight cancer and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Our mission is to support you in your cancer journey and improve your general health and quality of life by:

  • Empowering you to take an active role in your treatment and health
  • Treating your cancer with state-of-the-art conventional therapies and lifestyle interventions
  • Reducing the side effects of treatment
  • Reducing your risk of recurrence

Take advantage of our well-rounded services during or after conventional cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation. You’ll learn simple, effective ways to enhance your well-being and quality of life.

Integrative Oncology Consultation

To find out how complementary therapies can help, you’ll meet with an oncologist, or cancer doctor, who is Board-Certified in Radiation Oncology and Integrative Medicine.

Together, the two of you will review your:

  • History of cancer and cancer treatments
  • Eating habits and nutritional requirements
  • Physical activity level and exercise abilities
  • Sleeping patterns
  • Stress level and coping skills
  • Appropriate supplements

Then, you’ll explore individualized ways to reduce side effects of traditional medical care and make you feel better.

Complementary Cancer Treatments

Complementary therapies, in addition to your traditional cancer therapies, aim to improve your quality of life during and after cancer treatment. Tell your Integrative Oncologist about your physical, emotional and spiritual well-being concerns so you can receive the fullest possible recommendations for integrative therapies. Your personalized plan for integrative complementary treatments may include:

  • Individualized stress management plan - Learn stress reduction techniques to incorporate into your daily lifestyle
  • Lifestyle review – Learn how to make adjustments in your lifestyle habits to further support your healing and health
  • Dietary guidance – Explains what to eat to help you recover faster and counsels you about nutritional supplements
  • Exercise advice – Recommends ways to increase your energy level; we offer many activity-based classes such as fitness and yoga
  • Meditation – Relaxes you, reduces stress and eases pain; we offer meditation classes
  • Spiritual care – Provides religious and spiritual support

As you make positive lifestyle changes, your immune system may grow stronger and make it harder for cancer cells to develop. You’ll regain a sense of control over your health.
