Do I Need Mitral Valve Surgery?

Your heart’s mitral valve may need to be repaired or replaced if the valve doesn’t keep blood flowing properly through the heart. A damaged valve might:

Either condition can cause symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue and swollen feet or legs.

Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery

If you’re a candidate for the minimally invasive approach to mitral valve surgery, your surgeon will make a small incision in your chest instead of conducting traditional open-heart surgery. This technique may let you return to everyday activities faster than traditional, open mitral valve repair or replacement. You could spend as little as two to three days in the hospital instead of the usual five to six after traditional open-heart surgery.

During either open or minimally invasive surgery, a heart-lung machine may take over your heart’s job of pumping blood to your body.

Heart Valve Repair

A surgeon may be able to repair your mitral valve by doing one of the following:

  • Reshaping the flaps that open and close the valve
  • Inserting a ring around a loose valve to tighten it

Heart Valve Replacement

If you experience severe mitral valve regurgitation or stenosis, a surgeon may exchange your damaged valve for a long-lasting mechanical or tissue valve. Ask the surgeon which type of valve is right for you based on your health, age and lifestyle.
