Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding is an important part of your relationship with your new baby, from encouraging bonding to providing optimal nutrition. To give you and your baby the best start, we make sure breastfeeding experts are available to assist you within the first hour after birth to help you initiate and maintain the breastfeeding connection.

You can also count on Adventist HealthCare to provide you with 24/7 access to certified lactation consultants, as well as access to breastfeeding support groups for additional help from others who share your experience.

Internationally Recognized Breastfeeding Support

Expect an optimal level of breastfeeding care and attention when you have your baby at Adventist HealthCare. In fact, Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center is one of fewer than 300 hospitals in the United States—and the first in Maryland—to be designated “baby friendly” by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The baby-friendly designation means you get:

  • Help starting to breastfeed within one hour of birth
  • Instructions about how to initiate and maintain lactation, even when separated from your baby
  • Assurance your baby will be given only breast milk, unless you or your doctor directs otherwise, and will not be given pacifiers or artificial nipples
  • To room-in with your infant 24 hours a day
  • Unrestricted breastfeeding
  • Support to give you the time and tools for breastfeeding success, including referrals to lactation support groups

Shady Grove Medical Center was also the first hospital in Maryland to be internationally recognized for exceptional breastfeeding care by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and the International Lactation Consultant Association.
