Labor & Delivery

Trust Adventist HealthCare to help you achieve the birth experience that’s right for you. You’ll feel empowered to make informed decisions that keep you and your baby as healthy as possible.

Labor & Delivery Suites

Take advantage of Adventist HealthCare’s comfortable labor and delivery suites, which include advanced technology that improves your birth experience. If you give birth vaginally, you’ll appreciate the convenience of staying in the same room throughout your labor and delivery.

You’ll always get close, continuous care from a maternity team that includes your personal obstetrician or midwife as well as compassionate nurses and anesthesiologists.

Coming to the Hospital

When you think you’re in labor, come through the main entrance of Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. Turn right and take the elevators at the end of the hallway to the third floor. From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., please use the Emergency Department entrance. If you’re delivering at Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital, enter through the main hospital entrance during business hours (6 a.m.–8 p.m.) and the Emergency Department entrance after hours (8 p.m.–6 a.m.). A staff member will direct you to the birth center.

Once you arrive in the maternity unit, your doctor or midwife will give you an initial assessment in the triage area. He or she will determine whether you’re ready to be admitted to the hospital or if you can return to the comfort of your home until you’re further along in labor.

High-Risk Pregnancies & Deliveries

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you’ll be in the skilled hands of Adventist HealthCare’s perinatologists (also called maternal-fetal medicine specialists—obstetricians who focus on complicated pregnancies). You may stay in the Antepartum Unit at Shady Grove Medical Center if you need inpatient medical supervision before birth or if you experience pre-term labor.

After Birth

Following delivery, you’ll move to a homelike, private mother-baby suite. Your healthy baby will stay in the room with you so the two of you can bond. But if your little one needs specialized care, he or she may stay in the Level III-B neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Shady Grove Medical Center or the Special Care Nursery at Washington Adventist Hospital.
