Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

One of the best ways to have a healthy baby is to stay healthy during pregnancy.

The Do’s and Don'ts of a Healthy Pregnancy

Start your baby out right by following these healthy pregnancy tips. If you’re not yet pregnant but you soon plan to be, consult with your doctor about how to best prepare yourself.

  • Maintain regular prenatal checkups with your doctor, starting as soon as you think you’re pregnant.
  • Wash your hands regularly to help prevent infections.
  • Avoid toxic substances and chemicals.
  • Take a daily multivitamin that contains folic acid (400–800 mcg) to help prevent neurological and spinal birth defects.
  • Avoid using alcohol and drugs.
  • Refrain from caffeine.
  • Do not start or stop any medications without speaking to your doctor.
  • Decide with your doctor whether to undergo certain prenatal tests and screenings.
  • Keep a healthy diet, and remain active, as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not smoke, and avoid secondhand smoke.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking at least 8–10 glasses of water a day.
  • Make sure to keep medical conditions, such as diabetes or epilepsy, under control.
  • Don’t clean or change a cat’s litter box, and avoid cat feces.
  • Avoid rodent feces, including cleaning up after pets such as hamsters and guinea pigs.
