Amputee Rehabilitation

If you lose a limb or were born without an arm or a leg, Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation can help you enjoy a more active, productive life.

Accredited Amputation Rehabilitation

You can feel confident in our quality of care because:

  • Our amputee rehabilitation services are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), the premier accrediting agency for rehabilitation programs. We were the third program of our kind in the country to earn this accreditation.
  • Our amputee patient outcomes [PDF] exceeded the national average in 2014 on nearly every measure, including improvement per day, goals met and patient satisfaction.

Comprehensive Services for Amputees

Physical Health & Rehabilitation’s inpatient amputee program includes two phases that help you adjust physically and psychologically to the loss of a limb.

Phase I

During your first stay, your care team will focus on:

  • Healing the amputation wound
  • Improving your strength, coordination and endurance
  • Increasing your mobility
  • Teaching you how to care for your limb and complete daily activities
  • Determining the best orthotic or prosthesis for you

Phase II

When you’re ready—typically within a month of amputation—you’ll return for a second stay that focuses on:

  • Prosthetic training and management
  • Skills used in everyday activities, such as cooking, cleaning and dressing, which you practice at our activities of daily living (ADL) apartment
  • Mobility
  • Skin care

Prosthetics & Orthotics

Depending on your illness or injury, your doctor may prescribe a:

  • Prosthesis to replace a missing limb
  • Orthosis (such as a brace) to stabilize a weak or paralyzed limb

A certified prosthetist or orthotist will fit you with a personalized device and teach you how to use it.

Promoting Amputee Life Skills
