Joint Replacement Rehabilitation

Following a hip or knee replacement, improve your long-term outcome and return to active living by committing to physical therapy from the expert team at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation Services

Following joint replacement surgery, our team will help you gradually find it easier to move and complete daily tasks through:

  • Gait training that improves your ability to walk
  • Transfer training, which helps you move from one spot to another
  • Exercises designed to increase flexibility, strength and endurance
  • Joint mobilization techniques that minimize scar tissue formation
  • Massage and therapeutic ultrasound to reduce stiffness and swelling
  • Group physical therapy that offers support from your peers
  • Wound care for the surgical site

Duration of Therapy

Your joint replacement rehabilitation team will tell you how long you should spend in therapy based on your age, fitness and level of motivation. The general guidelines for your therapy duration will also vary based on your procedure:

  • Knee replacement – Two or three sessions of outpatient therapy per week for six to eight weeks
  • Hip replacement – Home therapy for two or three weeks, then two or three weekly sessions of outpatient therapy for three to four weeks
