Bariatric Surgery Program

At Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, we understand how being overweight can put an unhealthy strain on your body. Our Bariatric program works to offer new hope to many who struggle with weight loss.

Through Bariatric surgery, also referred to as weight loss surgery, the size of the stomach is reduced, helping to decrease the amount of food a person can eat, and helping them feel full longer. The results can be dramatic, with people who have had the surgery losing an average of 60-70% of their excess body weight in 12-18 months.

Program Components

Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center's Bariatric program includes:

  • Patient and support person education
  • Exercise training
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Psychological evaluation and support
  • Medical clearance
  • Support group meetings
  • Life long follow up

At Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, Bariatric surgery involves modification of the gastrointestinal tract that decreases a person's ability to get food into their body. Whenever possible, our surgeons perform Bariatric Surgery by using a less invasive “Laparoscopic” procedure which reduces recovery time. The Laparoscopic technique involves making several small incisions in the abdominal wall. A small camera and surgical instruments are inserted, eliminating the need for a long incision required in an open procedure.

Program Goals

The goals of weight loss surgery are to:

  1. Improve Health
  2. Improve Quality of Life
  3. Increase Lifespan
  4. Not Cosmetic-this is only a side effect

At Shady Grove, our Bariatric surgery program focuses on the involvement of our team of weight loss professionals from preoperative preparation to postoperative support. We are here to assist you in achieving your goals.
