First and foremost, do all you can to prevent chronic wounds. Prevention is the first step in chronic wound care.

Diabetes Patients

If you have diabetes:

  • Control your diabetes by becoming well educated on the condition
  • Inspect feet daily and never walk barefoot
  • Test the temperature of water with forearm or elbow
  • Be careful with sharp, foreign objects around the home

Caregivers

For caregivers to older parents or loved ones, especially the bedridden:

  • Inspect for wounds regularly
  • Be careful of too-hot water and sharp objects
