The Magnolia Unit for Senior Adults

Adventist Behavioral Health's Magnolia Unit is a 10-bed acute inpatient unit dedicated to serving senior adults age 60 years and older. Based in Rockville, Maryland the Unit is the only one of its kind in Montgomery County. The Magnolia Unit provides critical stabilization and short-term, inpatient treatment for senior adults whose sudden life changes (such as the death of a loved one) or other stressors have triggered symptoms requiring an acute treatment environment.

Treatment & Therapy

Treatment consists of individual and group therapies as well as expressive therapy, which incorporates art, dance, music, creative writing and physical exercise. The Unit is best suited for the mentally ill senior adult who can benefit from receiving treatment in the least restrictive environment necessary for their safety with other patients of similar age, acuity and activity levels. Adventist Behavioral Health's goal is to provide the intensive therapeutic services needed to help senior adult patients return safely to the community as quickly as possible.

Magnolia Unit Features & Services

Adventist Behavioral Health's Magnolia Unit will offer senior adults who are accustomed to living independently the acute treatment and stabilization needed to return safely to their homes and communities. The Unit features include:

  • 10 private patient bedrooms
  • Dedicated clinical team specializing in providing mental health care to senior adults
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Reminiscence Therapy
  • Private courtyard
  • Dietary staff to meet the unique nutritional needs of senior adults
  • Family therapy and primary caregiver education
  • Pastoral care

Each private room will serve as a peaceful sanctuary because the Magnolia Unit was designed to feel like a home away from home for senior adults who are accustomed to living independently. The Unit also features a kitchenette where patients can enjoy snacks throughout the day in addition to meals served in the facility's cafeteria.

Individualized Discharge Care Plans

Prior to discharge, Adventist Behavioral Health creates an Individualized Discharge Care Plan, based on the patient's functional and cognitive abilities, a safety assessment and a safety plan. The purpose of the safety plan is to ensure each patient has the support needed to complete day-to-day tasks and successfully sustain themselves upon returning home. Adventist Behavioral Health staff members will identify areas where the patient needs additional support such as taking medication or preparing food unassisted postdischarge. As part of the safety plan, Adventist Behavioral Health will provide a list of community agencies that can offer assistance to the patient and their family at home.
