Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Expands Hours Of Pediatric Emergency Department To 24 Hours-A-Day

Only Program in Maryland Where All Doctors are Both Board-Certified and Trained in Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Rockville, MD - The Pediatric Emergency Department at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has expanded its hours of operation to 24 hours-a-day beginning this month in order to meet the community's growing need for care.

The Pediatric Emergency Department is staffed by specially trained doctors and pediatric nurses, and offers specialized care designed just for children. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is the only program in the State of Maryland where all of the physicians in the pediatric emergency department are board-certified in pediatrics or emergency medicine and have received fellowship training or board certification in pediatric emergency medicine.

This specialized service is part of the hospital's Emergency Department which treated more than 80,000 patients in 2002, making it one of the busiest in Maryland. More than 24,000 children were treated as emergency patients at the hospital last year.

"The expansion in hours of our pediatric emergency department is in direct response to the growing need in our community," said Scott Freedman, M.D., Medical Director of Pediatric Services at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. "We're pleased to be able to offer this specialized service for our community."

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital offers a comprehensive array of treatment services for children, including a pediatric intensive care unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric surgery and a pediatric inpatient unit, among other services. The programs are supported by a host of pediatric sub-specialist physicians, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists and neurologists trained to care for children from birth to 18 years-old.

Located in Rockville, Maryland, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital  has 263 licensed beds and employs approximately 1,800 people. The hospital, which is affiliated with Adventist HealthCare, provides an array of health care services including maternity and high-risk maternity services, cardiology, cancer treatment, orthopedic care, inpatient and outpatient surgery and many other services.
