Washington Adventist Hospital Plans Free Screening for Peripheral Vascular Disease

Takoma Park, MD - Washington Adventist Hospital will hold a free screening for individuals at risk for Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), a potentially fatal condition.

The screening is in conjunction with the national Legs for Life program and will be held on Monday, September 27, 2004, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the hospital's Conference Center. The screening will be performed by physicians and staff of Washington Adventist Hospital's CardioVascular Institute and the Prevention & Wellness Department.

Participants will be asked to complete a lifestyle questionnaire to determine their risk for PVD. The screening is a simple test called the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI), which can determine whether an individual is at risk by comparing the blood pressure in the arms to the blood pressure in the legs. Additionally, screening participants will have the opportunity to speak with a physician. The test results will be forwarded to participants and their personal physicians for follow up and further evaluation, as needed.

"PVD is a significant health threat facing our nation today," said Judy Lichty, Director of Prevention and Wellness for Adventist HealthCare. "More than 10 million Americans suffer from this disease. PVD restricts the flow of blood to the leg arteries, and also raises the risk of heart attack, stroke or life-threatening aortic aneurysm."

"Many individuals are not even aware they have this condition, and we are hopeful this event will help raise awareness about PVD," added Lichty. "Early diagnosis and treatment are vitally important."
