Washington Adventist Hospital Plans Free Weight Loss and Health-Screening Event

Takoma Park, MD - Washington Adventist Hospital will hold a free weight loss and health-screening event on Sunday, June 6, from noon until 4 p.m. in the hospital's Conference Center.

The event, co-sponsored by the national Lose to Live Foundation, will feature blood pressure screenings, body mass index calculations, bone density calculations, and depression screenings. Participants will receive information about nutrition, eating disorders, exercise, stress management, and behavior and lifestyle changes. The first 50 people to register for this event will receive a free lipid screening.

In addition, participants will have the opportunity to talk to a bariatric surgeon about gastric bypass surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery, a procedure that can help to alleviate obesity-related disease and help in the lifelong maintenance of a healthy weight.

"Obesity is one of the most significant health threats facing our nation today," said Judy Lichty, Director of Prevention and Wellness for Adventist HealthCare. "Fortunately, there are many actions people can take to lose weight and improve their health, ranging from simple lifestyle changes to gastric bypass surgery. We are hopeful that this event will provide the public with information about the weight-loss options that are available."

Among its many specialties, Washington Adventist Hospital offers a bariatric surgery program. The program follows a holistic approach that includes a team of specialists from several areas of health care, led by the hospital's experienced bariatric surgeons. Whenever possible, the surgeons perform bariatric surgery by using a less invasive laparoscopic procedure which reduces recovery time.

Located in Takoma Park, Washington Adventist Hospital is a 315-bed, state-of-the-art acute care facility. The hospital employs nearly 2,000 people and has a medical staff of 750 physicians. Washington Adventist Hospital is part of Adventist HealthCare, a non-profit network of health care providers that includes hospitals, home health agencies, nursing centers and other health care services.
