Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Receives State Approval for Outpatient Surgery Center

Rockville, MD - Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has received approval from the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) to open an ambulatory surgery center in Rockville, Maryland. The new center, which will be located on Shady Grove Road, in the Fallsgrove Village Center Office Building, will allow Shady Grove Adventist Hospital to extend its services into the community to meet a recognized health care need.

"The community that we serve continues to develop and grow. It is important that our hospital expand to meet the changing needs of our patients and physicians both within our hospital and throughout the community. Our new ambulatory surgery center will provide added convenience and easier accessibility to surgical patients who do not require an overnight stay in our hospital," explained Shady Grove Adventist Hospital President, Deborah A. Yancer.

The 12,000 square foot facility will handle outpatient surgical procedures, such as hernia repair; insertion of IV access devices for medication therapy; non-complex gynecological procedures; and tonsillectomies. It will have four operating rooms and two procedure rooms. In addition, there will be a large surgical prep, holding and recovery room with a central nurse's station and rooms customized for pediatric patients.

In May, Dr. Robert Moffitt, a Commissioner for the MHCC, submitted a positive recommendation for Shady Grove's ambulatory surgery center after performing a thorough analysis of the application and research into the type of care that is delivered by ambulatory surgery centers. He found that the need for this type of care exists in Shady Grove's service area. The full commission agreed with his in-depth analysis and granted a Certificate of Need (CON) to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital on June 16.

"We are pleased that the Maryland Health Care Commission, and particularly Commissioner Moffitt, recognized the need for this outpatient surgery center in our community," noted Yancer.

Interior construction plans for the ambulatory surgery center are currently being finalized. The new facility is expected to open in early 2006.
