Health Providers, Officials to Discuss Strategies to Eliminate Disparities in Suburban Maryland Region

Adventist HealthCare’s Center on Health Disparities to host more than 200 health-care providers, representatives from across the region at annual conference in Montgomery County

Rockville, Md. - The Center on Health Disparities at Adventist HealthCare will host a conference on Tuesday, Nov. 18 to highlight the progress that Washington Adventist Hospital, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and 14 community partners have achieved in reducing health-care disparities in Montgomery, Prince George’s and Frederick counties.

The conference will focus on innovative research activities, community partnerships, local programs and services, and policies to address health disparities and ensure that minority and underserved populations receive high-quality health care. Language access services and cultural competency of health-care providers will be discussed with the goal of sharing best practices that promote patient-centered care.  This conference offers an opportunity to foster collaborative relationships among local community organizations working on reducing health disparities.

“Achieving health equity is our passion and our collective energy fuels our engines,” said Marcos Pesquera, Executive Director of the Center on Health Disparities.

The morning keynote speaker is Amy Wilson-Stronks, Principal Investigator with the Joint Commission, who will discuss the development of national hospital standards for Culturally Competent Patient-Centered Care.

The afternoon keynote speaker is Maryland Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-Dist 4), who will discuss health-care policy and implications for health-care providers and advocates. A panel discussion on policy will follow that includes health department officials from Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, as well as the President of the Maryland Hospital Association.

Other panelists will discuss research on measuring health disparities locally and strategies to advance the disparities agenda. Download Complete Program PDF
