Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Opens New Pediatric Emergency Department

Expanded space is part of Hospital's ongoing, four-year, $100 million expansion and renovation project

Rockville, MD - Shady Grove Adventist Hospital now has more specialized space to provide emergency medical care to children in Montgomery County and the region with the opening of its new and expanded Pediatric Emergency Department (ED).

Just in time for the summer season, which brings a wide range of potential outdoor injuries and conditions in children, the hospital today marks the upcoming opening of its new Pediatric ED, which includes six additional treatment bays, bringing the unit's total to 17. This new unit will be one of the largest dedicated Pediatric EDs in Maryland.

"Children are an important part of the community that is served by Shady Grove Adventist Hospital," said Shady Grove President Dennis Hansen. "Our new Pediatric Emergency Department provides more space for families to receive care from our highly qualified team of pediatric emergency physicians, nurses and staff. We are pleased to celebrate the opening of this space with our community."

Shady Grove's Pediatric ED opened in 1996 and soon expanded to become the first 24-hour Pediatric ED in Montgomery County. Today, the department provides emergency medical care to more than 24,000 children each year- more than any other pediatric emergency department in the county. The staff of Shady Grove's Pediatric ED is specially trained and experienced in the care of ill and injured children and includes board certified pediatric emergency physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pediatric nurses and medical technicians. The Pediatric ED is also supported by a number of pediatric medical and surgical specialists including surgeons, radiologists, intensivists and anesthesiologists.

The new Pediatric ED has larger and more private treatment bays. The unit has colorful walls and curtains as well as fun shapes on the floor to make the space more inviting for young patients.

Shady Grove's Pediatric ED is supported by the hospital's 25-bed inpatient pediatric unit, which includes Montgomery County's only pediatric intensive care unit.

"When children have a medical emergency, it is reassuring to come to a place where the staff and physicians specialize in pediatric care," said Dr. Scott Freedman, Medical Director of the Pediatric Emergency Department. "It is as important for the children and their families to feel comforted by the atmosphere and environment of the unit. We are extremely pleased to open this new and expanded department for the community."

Shady Grove's new, 3,400-square-foot Pediatric ED is part of the hospital's ongoing, four-year, $100 million expansion and renovation project that started in 2005. This summer, Shady Grove will also open a new and expanded neonatal intensive care unit as well as expanded labor and delivery space.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, a not-for-profit, acute care facility with 293 licensed beds, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2009. Shady Grove offers a broad range of health services including emergency care; high-risk obstetrical and neonatal care; cardiac and vascular interventional care; oncology care; several surgical specialties; and a number of specialized services for children, including the first Pediatric Emergency Department in Montgomery County and the only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in the county. The Shady Grove Adventist Emergency Center in Germantown opened in 2006 and is providing increased access to emergency medical care for more than 33,000 residents in 2008.
