Adventist Behavioral Health Celebrates 30 Years of Giving Hope to Mentally Ill in the Community

Rockville , MDAdventist Behavioral Health, which began as an acute psychiatric facility in Rockville in 1981 and has now grown to become one of the largest mental health providers in Maryland, today announced that its Rockville campus is celebrating 30 years of providing mental health care that instills hope in the mentally ill.

During the last 30 years, the Rockville campus has expanded its breadth of services to include a residential treatment center for adolescents with behavioral challenges, a special and general education school, a psychiatric treatment unit dedicated to senior adults, and partial hospitalization programs for children and adults. Adventist Behavioral Health also has locations in Anne Arundel and Dorchester Counties.

Today, the Rockville campus is proud to announce the following quality-driven enhancements, which aim to address unmet mental health needs, improve overall patient experience, and increase provider and agency access to our programs and services:

  • A substance abuse program for active military personnel. The program was created in response to the high rate of alcohol and substance abuse among military personnel. The Rockville campus plans to open the new military program in the first quarter of 2011. The program will help military personnel overcome addiction and safely return to active duty.
  • An Adult Partial Hospitalization Program (Adult PHP) designed to offer therapeutic services to individuals suffering from mood disorders such as major depression or bipolar disorder on an outpatient basis from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.  According to Mental Health America, formerly the Mental Health Association, approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population reports at least one depressive symptom in a given month. The Adult PHP provides critical intervention for these mentally ill individuals on an outpatient basis so they can remain in the community while receiving much-needed psychiatric care.
  • The Center for Assessment, Resources, and Education (CARE) located at 14917 Broschart Road in Rockville. CARE offers psychiatric assessments by licensed clinicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Members of the community can also visit CARE to learn about Adventist Behavioral Health’s free programs such as Operation Runaway.
  • New toll-free number (1-855-ABH-CARE) to access  inpatient psychiatric services at Adventist Behavioral Health’s two Montgomery County Locations (Adventist Behavioral Health Rockville and the Behavioral Health Unit at Washington Adventist Hospital). The new system will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“Adventist Behavioral Health’s services have grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of the individuals and families in our community.” said Sako Maki, President, Adventist Behavioral Health.  “We strive to be the mental health provider of choice for a broad range of treatment needs including adults with substance abuse problems, senior adults suffering from severe depression and children with behavioral challenges.”

The year-long anniversary celebration will include educational opportunities for the behavioral health community, an enhanced website with photo tours of Adventist Behavioral Health’s facilities, and educational resources for consumers.
