Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Is First in Maryland to Provide New Therapy for High-Risk Pregnancies

Rockville, MDShady Grove Adventist Hospital has become the first hospital in Maryland and the Washington metropolitan area to use a cutting edge therapy for pregnant women diagnosed with a rare blood clotting disorder.

The disorder, called antithrombin III deficiency, puts a patient at 75 percent lifetime risk of clotting. The risk increases during pregnancy, delivery or any surgical procedure.

The therapy, Thrombate III, “can reduce that risk to ten percent, because it replaces exactly the protein that is missing. The innovative therapy here at Shady Grove allows us to approximate the right recipe to make sure the blood is not too thick and not too thin,” said Dr. Sheri Hamersley, a maternal fetal medicine specialist at Shady Grove Adventist who has administered the treatment.

Thrombate III was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for obstetrical use for patients with hereditary antithrombin III deficiency. The medication is carefully dosed for each patient and delivered intravenously.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has treated the first two cases in the region. Without the therapy, it could have been a life-threatening experience for the baby and/or the mother. Today, the patients have healthy babies.

“This is an important treatment. We are pleased to be one of the few institutions in the nation able to provide this innovative therapy to our pregnant patients who need it,” said Dennis Hansen, president of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital delivers 5,000 babies each year. It is home to a Level IIIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, one of the highest designations attainable, that is staffed around the clock by neonatologists (doctors specializing in newborn baby care) and neonatal nurses, all who are trained to care for the most complex and high risk situations among newborns. The Birth Center at Shady Grove also includes an Antepartum Unit staffed with perinatalogists (high-risk obstetricians) who provide care to women who require inpatient medical supervision during pregnancy.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is a not-for-profit, acute care facility in Rockville, Maryland, with 336 licensed beds. Shady Grove is committed to delivering excellent health care through a ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing. The hospital offers a broad range of health services and is recognized for excellence in emergency care; high-risk obstetrical and neonatal care; cardiac and vascular interventional care; oncology care; several surgical specialties; and a number of specialized services for children. The Shady Grove Adventist Emergency Center in Germantown provides emergency medical care to more than 35,000 residents each year. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is part of Maryland-based Adventist HealthCare, an integrated health-care delivery system that is one of the largest employers in the state of Maryland.
